County GOP chair questions Haley’s religious conversion
The chairman of the Pickens County Republican Party has sent out an e-mail to party members that includes two stories about Republican gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley’s relationship with her Sikh upbringing.
Haley converted to Christianity 13 years ago, but was raised as a Sikh by her parents. In the e-mail Pickens GOP chairman Phillip Bowers said he had doubts about the authenticity of Haley’s conversion.
“There are lots of contradictions to her story,” Bowers wrote. “It’s not my place to
question her faith, but I do question her honesty. If anyone finds the truth, please let me know.
“Again, I’m not questioning her faith, but I absolutely can’t stand a liar.”
Attached to the e-mail were links to a Christian Broadcasting Network story about changes in how Haley’s campaign literature has referred to her faith since she first ran for office in 2004. The e-mail also included a link to a story from The State.
Bowers said he has gotten mostly positive response, though two people criticized his decision. Bowers is a long-time friend of Barrett, he said, but has not formerly endorsed his candidacy.
Bowers said he could not sit back and say nothing about the issue.
“It appears there is something going on that people should know about,” Bowers said in an interview. “I have been getting e-mails for weeks.”
Haley is campaigning with former first lady Jenny Sanford and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the Lowcountry today. Efforts to reach campaign manager Tim Pearson were unsuccessful.

Wonder why Sikhs scare them? It is the thing they use to cover their heads.
