What do you think of someone who would take up accounting as their college major and hope to pursue a carreer in it?
Everything is getting computerized, and accountants may not be as high in demand as other professions.
Besides, who wants to calculate costs and profits that aren’t their own for the rest of their lives?

Whilst it is usual for people to sterotype accountants as bean counters and number crunchers….I would say the acme of accountancy (imagine you are a black belt ninth dan in accountancy) is all about languange.
Accounting is the language of business. If an accountant choose to be a number cruncher and not value add by see beyond the numbers to provide advice to enhance business performance, then it is inevitable that he or she gets replaced by better number crunchers (i.e. computers).
Trust me, if accountancy is merely about calculations of costs and profits, the profession would have died long ago and there would not be the Enron case….heh heh

I think it is a good, solid career, and always will be. Every business, large or small, requires an accountant or accountants to ensure that everything is done correctly. As for computer technology, management accountants take courses in computers as well, and often liaise between IT and management.
In the business world, there’s nothing more important than the ability to make sense of numbers and figures. This understanding is crucial when making strategies and informed decisions. Accounting courses gives you the FOUNDATION you need to survive in the business world.
You don’t need to be an accountant just because you majored in accounting. I am an accounting major and now moving into various positions in a bank. It gives you options.
As for computers, you may be in trouble if you just stick with book-keeping….
Accounting is actually one of the fastest growing fields right now thanks to all of those companies with shady accounting practices. After Enron, Congress passed the Sarbanes-Oxley Act which mandates a lot more audit work before a company’s financial statements can be released.
The jobs that are being automated away are basic bookkeeping positions. Being an accountant is a lot more than just recording transactions and basic calculations.
See if this helps
